Is a financial advisor worth 1% annual fee?
I've been managing my own investments (mostly index funds in my IRA and 401k) for about 5 years. Portfolio is around $180,000 now.
A financial advisor reached out offering comprehensive planning - retirement, tax optimization, estate planning, etc. Fee is 1% annually (so ~$1,800/year on my current balance).
Honestly, I don't know if I'm doing everything right. I'm just buying VTI and VXUS and hoping for the best. Maybe I'm missing tax strategies or making mistakes?
But 1% feels HIGH. Over 30 years that could be hundreds of thousands in fees.
Questions:
- Is 1% standard? Can I negotiate lower?
- At what net worth is an advisor actually worth it?
- What value should I expect beyond just investment management?
For context: 38 years old, married, household income ~$175k, want to retire by 60.
