Step-up in basis at death - how does it affect inherited stocks and real estate?
107
My mother has stocks she bought in 1985 for $10k that are now worth $400k. She's been afraid to sell because of the capital gains. I've heard if she leaves them to me I get a 'stepped-up basis' and the gains disappear. Is this true? Does it apply to real estate too? What about stocks in IRAs?
