How to handle an inherited IRA — 10-year rule, RMDs, and tax planning
36
My father passed away earlier this year and I inherited his Traditional IRA worth about $180k. I'm 42 (non-spouse beneficiary). I've heard about the SECURE Act's 10-year rule — I have to empty the account within 10 years. Do I have to take RMDs each year within those 10 years, or can I wait and take it all in year 10? The tax implications of a lump sum in year 10 could push me into the 35% bracket. How should I plan the distributions?
