Flood insurance — do I need it if I'm not in a FEMA flood zone?
22
I live a mile from a river but my property is NOT in a FEMA-designated Special Flood Hazard Area. My mortgage lender doesn't require flood insurance. But a neighbor said 25% of flood claims come from outside high-risk zones. Is flood insurance worth it for moderate-risk areas? What does NFIP flood insurance cost in Zone X (moderate risk)? Is private flood insurance cheaper than NFIP? What's actually covered — just the structure, or contents too?
