Is pet insurance worth it — or should I just save money in a pet emergency fund?
38
I adopted a 2-year-old mixed breed dog and I'm getting quotes for pet insurance: $42/month with a $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement. Over the dog's expected 12-year lifespan, that's about $6,000 in premiums. My last dog had two emergencies totaling $5,800 over 14 years. The math seems close. When does pet insurance actually make financial sense vs self-insuring? Are there policies without breed-specific exclusions?
