Tax-loss harvesting — how does it work and is it worth the effort?
25
I have a taxable brokerage account with about $250k in index funds. Some of my positions (bought in 2024) are down about 15%. I've heard about tax-loss harvesting but I'm not sure how to execute it. If I sell a losing fund and immediately buy a similar (but not 'substantially identical') fund, can I deduct the loss? How much can I deduct per year? $3,000? Can I carry forward excess losses?
